看到 but 就直接翻成「但是」，結果整句話完全不通？But 用法其實不只轉折，還有「除了」的意思！Everything but 和 nothing but 更是超容易搞混，一個是「什麼都有，就缺那個」，一個是「只有那個」，邏輯完全相反。為什麼會這樣？怎麼記才不會搞錯？
大家都知道 but 是「但是」，用來轉折。但其實 but 還有另一個意思：except（除了）。
這個用法比較少見，但出現在一些固定片語裡超常用。重點是，這時候 but 不是「但是」的意思，而是「除了…之外」。這就是為什麼 everything but、nothing but 這些片語會讓人搞混，因為 but 在這裡不是轉折，是「除了」！
