「適合」的英文很多人第一個想到就是 suitable，然後從工作郵件寫到面試自我介紹統統都在用。問題是，面試時說 “I am very suitable for this role”，句子本身沒有錯，但老外聽起來就是微妙。Appropriate、Suitable、Applicable 這三個字中文都能翻成「適合、合適、適用」，但各自強調的重點完全不同，用錯場合就會讓英文聽起來不夠自然。
三個字各管什麼？
先給你最快的判斷方式：
Appropriate 管的是「對不對、得不得體」，跟場合、禮儀、道德標準有關。
Suitable 管的是「條件有沒有配到」，跟特質、資格、需求的匹配有關。
Applicable 管的是「這條規則或方法，在這裡能不能用」，屬於法規、政策的「適用」。
用一個問題就能分清楚 appropriate suitable 差異：你在問的是禮儀道德問題（appropriate）、條件符合的問題（suitable），還是規則適用的問題（applicable）？搞清楚這個，適合的英文要選哪個，就不用再猜了。
Appropriate：場合、禮儀、「這樣做合適嗎？」
Appropriate 的核心在於「符合社會規範或場合要求」。用這個字的時候，你在判斷的是：這樣做對嗎？這樣說得體嗎？這個時機合適嗎？
常用的情境有：衣著是否符合場合（dress code）、在會議或職場中行為是否恰當、用語是否得體，以及時機的判斷。想想你寫職場英文郵件的時候，選詞用字是否得體，就是在問 appropriate 的問題。
Appropriate 的反義是 inappropriate，說「不得體、不合適」的時候用，比 “not appropriate” 更簡潔有力。

Suitable：條件匹配、「這個符合我的需求嗎？」
Suitable 的核心在於「特質和條件是否跟需求匹配」。用 suitable 的時候，你在評估的是：這個東西或這個人的特性，跟我要的有沒有配起來？
職場上找人才（這個人的資歷符合職位嗎？）、選購物品（這個產品符合我的需求嗎？）、找房子（這間公寓適合我的家庭情況嗎？），這些都是 suitable 的典型情境。說到適合的英文，suitable 其實是三個字裡面最容易被過度使用的一個，因為它的中文翻譯「適合」太常見，大家什麼情況都想套上去。

用法要注意：Suitable 後面通常接 for，不是 to：

這個軟體適合初學者使用。
另外，說「我很適合這份工作」的時候，不要直接說 “I am suitable for this job”。Suitable 通常用來描述「物品或條件的特性」，用在人身上聽起來像在把自己當產品規格描述。準備英文面試時，這幾種說法更道地：

Applicable：規則、政策、「這條在這裡適用嗎？」
Applicable 是三個字裡面最「技術性」的一個，重點在「規則、方法、政策能不能應用在特定情況」。常出現在法律文件、合約、申請表，以及填表時常看到的 “if applicable” 這個短語。
這個字就像中文「適用」，跟「適合」的感覺不一樣：不是在說一個東西好不好、配不配，而是在說「這條規定、這個方法，放在這個情況下，能不能用、有沒有關係」。

If applicable 和 Where applicable 怎麼用？
這兩個短語超常出現在正式文件、表格、合約裡，但很多人看到就跳過，其實用法不複雜：
If applicable = 如果適用的話，強調「這個情況可能不一定存在」，所以才需要判斷。
Where applicable = 在適用的地方，強調「只要符合條件的地方，都這樣執行」。
兩個語感的細微差異：if applicable 是問一個特定情況「有沒有這件事」，where applicable 是指「所有符合條件的地方都適用」。

Please provide your previous employer’s contact information, if applicable.

（意思是：如果你有工作過，才需要填）

If appropriate 是另一個常用短語，意思是「如果合適的話」，常出現在客套話或建議中：
A: How do I end a follow-up email without being too pushy?
A: 追蹤信結尾怎麼寫才不會太有壓力？
B: Something like “Feel free to reach out if appropriate” works well. It’s polite and gives them space.
B: 像「Feel free to reach out if appropriate」就很好。有禮貌，也給對方空間。

要搞清楚 appropriate suitable 差異，最好的方式就是把三個字放在同樣情境下比較，看看語感有什麼不同：

A: What’s the difference between saying “this rule is appropriate” and “this rule is applicable”?

B: “Appropriate” means the rule fits the situation ethically or contextually. “Applicable” means the rule legally or technically applies here. Different angles entirely.
B: “Appropriate” 是說這條規則在道德或情境上符合，”Applicable” 是說這條規則在法律或技術層面適用於這裡。角度完全不同。

A: My colleague said a policy was “suitable” for our team. Is that the right word?
A: 我同事說某項政策對我們的團隊「suitable」，這樣用對嗎？
B: It depends on the context. If they mean the policy matches your team’s needs, sure. But if they mean the policy applies to your team, “applicable” would be more precise.
B: 看語境。如果是說政策跟你們的需求匹配，沒問題。但如果是說政策適用於你們，applicable 更精準。
Appropriate、Suitable、Applicable 這三個字，記住一個核心就夠了：appropriate 問「得不得體」、suitable 問「合不合條件」、applicable 問「這條規則用得到嗎」。下次寫信或開口之前，先想想你要表達的是哪種「適合」，選對了，英文自然就更道地。
