有沒有聽過 “My job is on the line” 這句話？很多人看到 on the line 中文直覺就猜「在線上」，但這樣理解的話，整句話根本說不通。On the line 跟「線上」一點關係都沒有，而且它還有三種完全不同的用法。今天一次把這個片語搞清楚，以後不管是追美劇還是跟外國人開會，都不會再傻眼了。
On the line 中文到底是什麼意思？
先從最核心的意思講起。
“[Something] is on the line” 的中文意思是「某樣東西處於危機中」或「某樣東西有風險、快撐不住了」。只要有東西面臨失去的可能，都可以用這個說法。
這個說法據說跟賭博有關。以前玩某些賭博遊戲，比如擲骰子猜大小，玩家會把籌碼押在賭桌上標示的「線」（line）旁邊，籌碼一旦放上去，就代表已經下了賭注，輸了就沒了。所以 on the line 慢慢演變成「有風險、懸而未決、處於危機中」的意思。
搞懂了來源，再看 “My job is on the line”，意思就很清楚了——我的工作快要不保了。

哪些東西可以 on the line？
這個片語好用的地方在於，很多東西都可以 on the line，只要是面臨危機、可能失去的，都可以這樣說。
在職場環境最常聽到，job、career、promotion 都可以搭配，如果你有在追商業競爭類的美劇，on the line 幾乎是必出現的台詞。不只職場，感情、名聲、性命都可以 on the line，使用範圍很廣。
常見可以跟 on the line 搭配的名詞：
- job / career / promotion（工作 / 職涯 / 升職）
- reputation（名聲）
- marriage / relationship（婚姻 / 關係）
- life（性命）
- business / company（生意 / 公司）
- deal / contract（交易 / 合約）

Put something on the line：主動押上去
On the line 也可以跟動詞 put 搭配，變成 “put something on the line”，意思是「主動把某樣東西押上去、甘願承擔這個風險」。
這跟前面被動式的「某樣東西面臨危機」不太一樣。Put something on the line 帶有主動、自願的感覺——你知道有風險，但你選擇這麼做。這種語氣通常帶點佩服的意味，表示那個人很有勇氣或很有擔當。

Lay it on the line：把話攤開來說
這是另一個跟 line 有關的片語，但 on the line 意思在這裡完全不同，不要搞混。
“Lay it on the line” 或 “lay something on the line” 的中文意思是「直接說清楚、把話攤開來講、不拐彎抹角」。就是那種有話直說、攤牌的感覺，通常用在比較嚴肅或需要把事情說清楚的場合。

B: I laid it on the line for her. She knows exactly what will happen if this continues.

等等，someone is on the line 是另一回事
最後要提一個很容易搞混的情況。
當主詞換成「一個人」的時候，on the line 意思就完全變了。”Someone is on the line” 不是說那個人面臨危機，而是說「某人在電話線上」，也就是「某人正在通話中或在線等候」的意思——是電話那頭有個人的意思。
這種同一個片語、主詞不同意思就不同的情況，英文裡其實還滿常見的。像是 get lost、break down 這類片語也都有超過一種意思，搞清楚語境才不會鬧笑話。

On the line 的三種用法其實不複雜，關鍵是搞清楚主詞是「東西」還是「人」，意思就截然不同。下次聽到 “Everything is on the line” 或 “She put her career on the line”，一眼就能看懂了。
