上學的時候，老師可能告訴過你：「兩個人之間用 between，三個人以上用 among。」聽起來很有邏輯，也很好記，對吧？但如果 among 用法真的這麼單純，台灣的英文學習者也不會這麼常在這兩個字上踩雷了。實際上，between 和 among 的差別比「數人頭」更微妙，有幾個場合，就算你數對了人數，還是很容易選錯。這篇把兩者的邏輯從頭說清楚，讓你以後不用再靠感覺猜。
先說說那個「人人都知道」的規則
那個「兩個用 between，多個用 among」的說法並不算錯，只是說得不夠完整。先了解 between 用法的基本規則，再往下看才有脈絡。
Between 的核心概念是：你心裡有「具體、可以個別辨認」的人或事物，說的是它們彼此之間的關係。Among 的核心概念是：你把某人或某事放進一個「整體的群體」裡，沒有特別分辨群體裡的每一個。
先看最基礎的例子：

Among 用法：它住在「模糊的群體」裡
Among 的關鍵不是「三個以上」，而是「你有沒有特別分辨每一個個體」。把某個人或某件事放進一個整體的群體裡，不去指定群體裡的某一個具體的人或事，這時候就用 among。
Among 用法的核心是「群體感」。Among friends、among the crowd、among the best，這些說法都是把某人或某物放進一個模糊的群體裡，你不需要知道群體裡有幾個人，也不需要分辨每一個。就像英文裡說 everyone 或 someone 的時候，你沒有指定是哪一個具體的人——其實跟不定代名詞的概念有點像，說的是「群體」而不是「某個特定的人」。

三個人也可以用 between？
這裡是很多人被那個「兩個規則」限制到的地方。
事實上，between 不是只能用在兩個人或兩件事之間。當你提到的是「具體、可以個別辨認」的人或事，就算有三個、四個，也可以用 between。
Between 用法的精髓在於「個別性」，不在於「數量」。如果你說的是三間特定的公司、四個有名字的人，用 between 沒有問題，因為你可以清楚分辨每一個。這跟很多英文字的選用邏輯一樣，不是看表面形式，而是看背後的意思——就像rather than 和 instead of 的差別，看的是你要表達的是「選擇」還是「替換」。

最容易踩的雷
知道規則是一件事，但有幾個情境特別容易讓人選錯，直接舉出來說清楚。
看到「之間」不一定是 between
很多台灣學習者看到「之間」就想到 between，但如果說的是一個不明確的群體，就要用 among。

“Between you and me” 是固定說法，不能換
這是一個常見的慣用語，意思是「就我們兩個知道，保密」。這裡 between 是固定的，不能換成 among。

Between 和 among 在職場 Email 和多益考試裡出現頻率都不低，這裡給你最實用的情境。
在正式文件或 Email 裡，談到雙方或多方明確的合作對象，通常用 between：
