有沒有這種經驗，讀英文文章或看美劇的時候，突然出現 in and of itself 中文不知道怎麼翻，大概猜一下意思就繼續看下去了？其實這個片語超常見，而且學會之後說起英文會多一種「我有在認真思考這件事」的感覺。這篇從意思到用法一次整理清楚，讀完包你懂。
In and of itself 到底在說什麼
in and of itself 的意思，大概是「單就這件事本身來看」或「光就這點來說」。
它的功能是把某件事情「單獨拉出來」評估，暫時不考慮其他因素的影響。
比方說，你在討論一個提案，你說：”The plan isn’t bad in and of itself.” 意思是：光看這個計畫本身，其實沒什麼大問題——問題是出在別的地方，可能是時機不對、預算不夠、或是執行面有狀況。
如果把 in and of itself 拿掉，直接說 “The plan isn’t bad.”，那就只是單純在說這個計畫不錯，完全沒有「先把其他因素放一邊來看」的那層意思。
聽起來差一點點，語感卻完全不同。這種乍看不知道在說什麼、但母語者超常用的固定片語，就是英文裡最容易被台灣人跳過、卻也最值得學的東西——就像之前介紹過的 All bets are off 一樣，第一次看完全不知道在說什麼，但一學就終生不忘。
什麼時候會用到它
最常出現的情境是你在分析一個問題、解釋一個狀況、或評論某件事的時候，尤其是那種「這件事本身不是問題，但加上其他因素就不一樣了」的場合。
比方說你要跟同事解釋為什麼某個提案沒過，或是你要跟朋友說某個決定沒有絕對的對或錯——這種需要「拆開來分析」的時候，in and of itself 就很好用。
簡單說，只要你想表達「光就這件事本身來說……但還要考慮其他因素」，這個片語就是你要的。

A: Why did the project fail? The strategy seemed fine to me.
A: 為什麼這個專案失敗了？我覺得策略看起來沒問題啊。
B: The strategy, in and of itself, was solid. The problem was the timing and the budget.
B: 光看策略本身其實是沒問題的，問題是出在時機和預算上。

A: Do you think learning grammar is actually useful?
A: 你覺得認真學文法真的有用嗎？
B: Learning grammar in and of itself won’t make you fluent. You still need tons of speaking practice.
B: 光學文法本身不會讓你流利的，你還是需要大量的口說練習。

A: Is working overtime necessarily a bad thing?
A: 加班這件事一定是壞事嗎？
B: Working overtime in and of itself isn’t necessarily bad. It really depends on whether you’re being compensated for it.
B: 加班這件事本身不一定是壞事，關鍵是你有沒有拿到該有的補償。

A: I feel like this apartment is too expensive for what it is.
A: 我覺得這間公寓有點貴，感覺不值那個錢。
B: The rent in and of itself is actually okay for this area. What pushes it up is the maintenance fee on top.
B: 光看這個區域，這個租金其實還算合理，讓它變貴的是另外加收的管理費。
放在句子哪個位置
in and of itself 通常可以放在兩個地方。
第一種是夾在主詞後面，前後加逗號，強調「這個主詞本身」：
“The idea, in and of itself, is good.”
第二種是放在句尾，接在你要評估的事情後面：
“It’s not a bad idea in and of itself.”
兩種都對，語感也差不多。放在主詞後面會讓 in and of itself 更突出，讀起來更強調；放在句尾比較輕鬆自然，口語對話裡用這種比較多。如果你不確定放哪裡，句尾通常比較不容易出錯。

A: 你覺得社群媒體有害嗎？
B: Social media, in and of itself, isn’t harmful. It’s how people use it that becomes the problem.
B: 社群媒體本身其實不是有害的東西，是人使用它的方式才造成問題。

A: 你覺得公司新的混合辦公政策怎麼樣？
B: It’s not a bad policy in and of itself. I just think the implementation needs more work.
B: 這個政策本身不差，我只是覺得執行面需要再加強。

B: Money, in and of itself, doesn’t guarantee happiness. But having enough definitely takes away a lot of stress.
B: 錢本身並不保證帶來快樂，但有足夠的錢確實會減少很多壓力。

A: Do you think moving abroad is the best way to improve English?
A: 你覺得出國住是提升英文最好的方法嗎？
B: Moving abroad in and of itself won’t improve your English. You still need to actively use it every single day.
B: 光是搬出去住本身不會提升你的英文，你還是需要每天主動去用才行。
跟 by itself 和 on its own 差在哪
這三個都有「本身」的感覺，很多人覺得可以互換，但其實語感差蠻多的。
by itself 和 on its own 的重點是「只靠它自己，不需要其他東西幫忙」，強調的是獨立性，或是「自動發生，不用人介入」。
in and of itself 的重點則是「把其他因素暫時放一邊，單獨評估這件事本身」，強調的是你看這件事的角度。
最直觀的差別：
- “The app can run by itself.” → 這個 app 可以自己跑，不需要人一直操作
- “The app, in and of itself, is useful.” → 光就這個 app 本身來說，它是有用的（但搭配其他工具可能效果更好）

A: Can this coffee machine operate by itself?
A: 這台咖啡機可以自動運作嗎？
B: Yeah, it runs by itself once you set it up. You don’t need to babysit it.
B: 可以，你設定好之後它就會自動跑了，不用一直顧著它。

A: Okay, but is it worth the price?
A: 那它值那個價錢嗎？
B: The machine, in and of itself, is definitely worth the investment. Whether it fits your routine is a different question.
B: 光就這台機器本身來說，絕對值得投資。但適不適合你的生活習慣，那又是另一回事了。

A: Did the medication work on its own, or did you need other treatments?
A: 這個藥單獨吃有效嗎，還是需要搭配其他治療？
B: It works on its own, but the doctor said combining it with physical therapy gives way better results.
B: 單獨吃是有效的，但醫生說搭配物理治療效果會好很多。

A: 那你會建議吃嗎？
B: The medication, in and of itself, has pretty solid results. Whether you actually need it depends on your specific condition though.
B: 光就這個藥本身來說，效果是不錯的。但你需不需要吃，還是要看你自己的狀況。
in and of itself 這個片語不難，但加進去的瞬間，你的英文就多了一層「我有在分析這件事」的感覺，不管是職場討論還是日常聊天都很好用。下次碰到需要「先把其他因素放一邊，單看這件事本身」的情況，記得試著用看看！
