想揪朋友半夜去吃鹹酥雞，或是想拉住一個氣到要當場離職的同事，這時候「說服」英文要怎麼講？課本教的 persuade 和 convince 當然沒錯，只是聽起來有點正式，老外平常聊天更常說 talk into 和 talk out of。一個把人拉進來，一個把人拉回來，用對了講話馬上自然很多。
Persuade 用法
Persuade 是「說服」英文裡最標準的一個字，意思是讓對方被你說動，然後真的去做某件事。語氣偏正式一點，工作 email、報告、新聞很常看到，跟朋友聊天也可以用，只是聽起來比較認真。
persuade 用法最常見的有這兩種：
- persuade + 人 + to + 原形動詞：說服某人去做某事
- persuade + 人 + that + 子句：讓某人相信某件事
另外也有 persuade someone into / out of doing something 的寫法，文法上沒問題，但日常對話比較少聽到。想表達這個意思的時候，大家通常直接用後面會講到的 talk into 和 talk out of。

A: 客戶有答應延後截止日嗎？
B: Yeah, my manager persuaded them to give us one more week.
B: 有，我主管說服他們多給我們一個禮拜。

A: 我以為你不去沖繩了。
B: I wasn’t, but Amy persuaded me to book the tickets. The flights were too cheap to pass up.
B: 本來沒有要去，但 Amy 說服我訂票了，機票便宜到不買很可惜。

A: 你怎麼讓你爸媽答應你搬出去的？
B: I persuaded them that living closer to work would save me two hours a day.
B: 我說服他們，住公司附近每天可以省兩個小時。

我們在想辦法說服更多客人改成年繳方案。
Convince 和 persuade 差在哪
這兩個字常被當成同義詞，但仔細分的話，重點不太一樣。convince 是讓對方「相信」某件事，改變的是想法；persuade 是讓對方「去做」某件事，改變的是行動。
所以 convince 最常見的結構是 convince + 人 + that + 子句，或是 convince + 人 + of + 名詞。
不過老實說，在美式口語裡 convince someone to do something 也超常見，母語人士幾乎不會覺得哪裡怪，只有在比較正式的寫作裡，才會刻意把兩個字分開。抓一個原則就好：講「相信」用 convince 最自然，講「去做」兩個都可以。對方被你說服之後，想法慢慢轉過來，英文還可以說 come around，這類改變想法的英文說法跟 convince 搭在一起用很順。

B: My mom took a while, but I finally convinced her that it’s safe there.
B: 我媽花了一點時間，但我最後讓她相信那邊很安全。

Talk into
talk into 中文就是「用嘴巴把人說動，讓他去做原本不太想做的事」，有點像中文說的「被拉下水」。它是一個片語動詞，動詞加上介系詞之後，片語的意思常常跟字面差很多，talk into 就是很典型的例子。
結構很固定：
- talk + 人 + into + V-ing
- talk + 人 + into + 名詞 / it
如果你是被說服的那個人，想講「我是被拉去的」，可以用被動的 get talked into something，很有「我本來沒有要去喔」的無奈感。另外，talk one’s way into something 是「靠一張嘴爭取到某個東西」，像是靠嘴巴拿到面試機會。

B: Actually pretty good! My roommate talked me into trying it, and now I’m hooked.
B: 其實蠻不錯的！我室友說服我去試，結果我現在上癮了。

B: I can’t, but my friends talked me into going to this hot pot place, and honestly it was amazing.
B: 是不能，但朋友硬拉我來這家麻辣鍋，老實說超好吃。

B: She talked her way into it. She’s really good at selling herself.
B: 她靠一張嘴爭取到的，她超會推銷自己。
Talk out of
talk out of 中文就是「勸人不要做」，結構跟 talk into 一模一樣，只是把 into 換成 out of：
- talk + 人 + out of + V-ing
- talk + 人 + out of + 名詞 / it
有一個超口語的用法一定要知道：Talk me out of it! 字面上是「把我勸退」，實際上就是「快阻止我」。看到很想買的東西，但錢包已經在哭的時候，傳這句給朋友就對了。
反過來，talk one’s way out of something 是「靠一張嘴脫身」，像是遲到被抓包，結果講一堆理由就躲過去了。
順便講一下「勸退」英文。如果你的意思是勸某人別做某件事，用 talk someone out of it 就對了。但台灣年輕人常說的「這價格直接勸退」，其實是「讓人打退堂鼓」，英文比較接近 put someone off，或是說某件事是 a turn-off。

常見錯誤
這幾個片語的結構不難，但有幾個錯超常見，特別是 into 和 persuade 後面到底要接什麼，很多人會搞混。

錯誤：She talked me into go shopping.
正確：She talked me into going shopping.
她說服我去逛街。
into 是介系詞，後面要接 V-ing，不能接原形動詞，也不能接 to + 原形動詞。

正確：They talked me into joining the team.
他們說服我加入團隊。
被說服的人要放在 talk 後面、into 前面。

錯誤：I talked him out doing that.
正確：I talked him out of doing that.
我勸他別那樣做。
out 後面的 of 不能省略。

A: Did you manage to get your dad to see a doctor?
A: 你有成功讓你爸去看醫生嗎？
B: Finally! I persuaded him to go last week.
B: 終於！我上禮拜說服他去了。
persuade 後面接 to + 原形動詞。如果寫成 I persuaded him going，就是錯誤的用法。
說服時的語氣
「說服」英文用對字只是第一步，語氣才是關鍵。說服人最怕聽起來像在逼對方，尤其是對主管或不熟的人，姿態放軟一點，成功率反而比較高。先用客氣的請求說法開場，再帶出你的理由，對方比較聽得進去。反過來，如果換你是被說服的那一方，而且真的不想答應，也可以有禮貌地婉拒，不用硬著頭皮點頭。
下面這幾句都是母語人士很常用、聽起來不會有壓迫感的說法：

容易搞混的 talk 片語
查 talk out of 的時候，很多人會把它跟下面這幾個片語搞混。長得很像，意思卻差很多：
- talk it out / talk things out：把話說開，兩個人坐下來好好溝通
- talk someone off the ledge：把快崩潰的人安撫下來，ledge 是窗台、邊緣的意思
- talk someone’s ear off：講個不停，講到對方耳朵快掉下來
talk someone off the ledge 很常用在朋友壓力大到快爆炸的時候，跟情緒失控的英文說法是同一種情境。

常見問題
persuade 後面接 to 還是 -ing？
如果是比較正式的「說服」英文，persuade 用法最常見的是 persuade + 人 + to + 原形動詞。persuade someone into doing something 文法上也可以，但比較少見。

talk me out of it 是什麼意思？
字面是「把我勸退」，日常用法就是「快阻止我」。通常是自己很想做一件衝動的事，請朋友幫忙踩煞車。

「勸退」英文怎麼說？
勸某人別做某件事，用 talk someone out of something。如果是「讓人打退堂鼓」的那種勸退，用 put someone off 比較貼切。

排隊排超長，直接把我勸退，所以我們換一家。
convince 可以接 to do 嗎？
可以，口語裡很常見。只是在正式寫作裡，「讓人去做」用 persuade 比較保險，「讓人相信」用 convince。

她終於說服我下載那個 app。
下次想拉朋友去吃宵夜，或是想拉住一個快衝動的同事，就不用只靠 persuade 了。talk into 和 talk out of 講起來更像真人在聊天，多用幾次就順了。
