「紙上談兵」英文最貼切的說法是 armchair general，就是只會在後方指揮、自己從來沒上過戰場的人。身邊一定有這種人：開會講得頭頭是道，真的要他動手就開始找藉口，看完兩支 YouTube 就覺得自己是專家。老外吐槽這種人其實有好幾種講法，有的偏理論派，有的偏只會嘴，語感差很多。這篇把最常用的說法整理好，每種都附情境對話，下次遇到這種人就知道怎麼形容了。
Armchair general
Armchair 是有扶手的沙發椅，general 是將軍。坐在沙發上的將軍，意思就是只會窩在舒服的地方指揮作戰，自己從來沒上過戰場。這個畫面跟中文的紙上談兵幾乎一模一樣。
紙上談兵的典故來自戰國時代的趙括。他從小熟讀兵書，講起兵法連他爸都辯不過他，結果真的帶兵上戰場，在長平之戰被秦軍打到全軍覆沒。理論滿分，實戰零分，這就是紙上談兵的由來。所以要找最貼近原意的紙上談兵英文，armchair general 絕對是第一名。
另一個說法是 armchair strategist，意思差不多，只是少了一點打仗的感覺，拿來形容職場上只會出策略、從來不下場執行的人特別適合。

Armchair critic
Armchair critic 中文可以理解成「只會坐在沙發上批評的人」。跟 armchair general 比起來，armchair critic 的重點不是只會指揮，而是只會挑毛病。看球賽罵球員、看電影罵導演、看同事簡報在旁邊碎念，可是叫他自己來做，他一個也做不出來。
這種人丟出來的意見通常沒什麼建設性，比較像是為了批評而批評，跟真正有幫助的 constructive criticism 差很多。
順帶一提，美國人看美式足球時很愛講 armchair quarterback，意思很接近，指的是那種坐在電視前面罵四分衛、覺得換自己上場一定傳得更好的觀眾。

A: 你有跟 Pete 共事過嗎？我受不了他。
B: Oh, tell me about it! He’s such an armchair critic. He gives you tons of advice, but when it comes to actually doing the work, he’s useless.
B: 超有同感！他就是只會出一張嘴批評的人，建議給一大堆，真的要做事的時候完全派不上用場。

All theory, no practice
這個說法超直白，就是「全部都是理論，完全沒有實務」。Theory 是理論，practice 是實際操作或實務經驗，兩個一放在一起，意思就很清楚了。如果不想用比喻，只想直接講出紙上談兵英文的意思，all theory, no practice 是最不容易被誤會的說法。
這裡要特別小心一個陷阱。很多人會把紙上談兵直接翻成 talk on paper，但老外聽到只會一頭霧水。英文裡確實有 on paper 的用法，不過意思是「理論上、書面上」，最常見的是 looks good on paper，形容一件事「紙面上看起來很好，實際上不一定行得通」。它通常是在講計畫、條件或履歷，不是拿來罵人的。

All talk
All talk 是光說不練英文裡最口語、最常聽到的講法。All 在這裡是「全部都是」，all talk 就是「全部都是嘴巴講講」。計畫講一大堆但從來不執行、每次都說要開始但永遠停在嘴巴上，這種人就是 all talk。
想加強語氣可以說 all talk, no action。如果是那種嘴上嗆很大、真的要他出手就縮回去的人，可以用 all bark and no bite，字面上是「只會叫不會咬」，跟中文說的「虛張聲勢」很像。
聽到有人又在畫大餅，老外很常回一句 I’ll believe it when I see it，意思是「等我親眼看到再說」，擺明了一點也不意外他又會食言。要酸得更明顯一點，也可以直接回 Good luck with that。

Talk the talk
完整的說法是 talk the talk but can’t walk the walk，字面上是「話講得很到位，路卻走不出來」。Talk the talk 指的是講起來很像那麼一回事，walk the walk 則是真的做到。這句很常拆開來用，例如 He can talk the talk, but can he walk the walk? 就是在質疑「他講得很厲害，但到底做不做得到？」
意思很接近的還有 talk a good game，形容一個人很會講，說得比做得好聽。這兩個說法也算是光說不練英文，只是更強調「很會包裝自己」這一點，所以在職場上特別好用。像是面試時把自己講得超厲害，進公司之後卻什麼都做不出來。這也是為什麼外商面試的面試官很愛追問具體例子，就是要分辨你是真的做過，還是只會 talk a good game。

Full of hot air
Hot air 是熱空氣，被拿來比喻空洞、沒有內容的話。熱空氣可以把氣球吹得很大，但裡面什麼都沒有，拿來形容講話的人也很貼切。Full of hot air 就是「滿口空話」、「吹牛不打草稿」的人。
跟 all talk 比起來，full of hot air 更強調話講得很誇張，像是一直吹噓自己多厲害、嘴上一直跟你保證一堆事，結果一個都沒兌現。語氣比 all talk 重一點，當面講會有點不給面子，比較常在私下吐槽時用。

Monday morning quarterback 和 Backseat driver
這兩種人不算紙上談兵，但一樣是只會出一張嘴，所以放在一起講。
Monday morning quarterback 是最道地的馬後砲英文。美式足球比賽通常在週日，到了週一早上，大家就開始在辦公室討論「四分衛剛剛應該怎麼傳才對」。比賽都結束了才開始出意見，就是典型的馬後砲。專案失敗後才說早就知道會這樣、股票跌了才說早該賣，都可以這樣形容。
Backseat driver 原本是指坐在後座一直指揮駕駛的乘客，「前面右轉」、「開太快了啦」、「你走錯路了」。現在也拿來比喻那些自己不用負責，卻一直在旁邊下指導棋的人。這種人超愛給人建議，只是從來沒人問過他。

「紙上談兵」英文可以說 talk on paper 嗎？
不行，talk on paper 不是英文的慣用說法，老外聽不出你在講什麼。要形容一個人紙上談兵，用 armchair general 或 all theory, no practice 最自然。
