問路的時候說 “Where is the MRT station?”，文法完全沒錯，但語氣就是少了點什麼。這就是間接問句的作用——同一個問題，換個包裝，聽起來差很多。
間接問句是什麼
間接問句（indirect question）就是把問題「包」進另一個句子裡。直接問句是直接問對方，間接問句則是透過一個引導句帶出問題，語氣更委婉、更有禮貌。
直接問句和間接問句放在一起比較會更清楚：
直接問：Where is the bathroom?
間接問：Do you know where the bathroom is?
直接問：What time does the store close?
間接問：Could you tell me what time the store closes?
在日常對話裡，直接問句當然沒有錯，但在比較正式的場合，或是問陌生人的時候，間接問句的語氣明顯更得體。職場英文也是一樣，用間接問句問同事或客戶問題，聽起來更專業、更有禮貌。多益（TOEIC）考試裡，間接問句的語序也是常見考點，搞清楚結構就不會在考場上失分。

間接問句的結構，這裡最容易寫錯
間接問句最容易出錯的地方就是語序。直接問句的語序是「助動詞 + 主詞 + 動詞」，但放進間接問句之後，要改回「主詞 + 動詞」的正常語序。
錯誤：Do you know where is the station?
正確：Do you know where the station is?
這個錯誤在多益 Part 5 非常常考，選項裡會同時出現這兩種語序，要看清楚。
間接問句分兩種結構，分別對應 Wh- 問句和 Yes/No 問句：
Wh- 問句：引導詞 + 主詞 + 動詞
Do you know + where + the station + is?
Yes/No 問句：if 或 whether + 主詞 + 動詞

Do you know 和 Did you know，差的不只是時態
很多人看到 Did you know 會直覺認為這是過去式，表示「你之前知道嗎」。其實不完全是這樣。這兩個句子在使用上有一個很重要的語感差異。
- Do you know = 真的在問對方知不知道某件事，需要對方回答
- Did you know = 分享一個資訊，暗示對方可能不知道，帶有「你知道嗎，其實……」的感覺
說得更白話一點：Do you know 是在問問題，Did you know 更像是在分享八卦或有趣事實。你朋友傳訊息給你說 “Did you know that coffee was originally eaten, not drunk?”，他不是真的在考你，他只是想跟你說一件有趣的事。
這個差異在職場裡也很實用。開會討論的時候，用 Did you know 帶出一個對方可能不知道的數據或情況，語氣比直接說 “You don’t know this, but…” 自然很多，也不會顯得咄咄逼人。

常見的間接問句開頭
除了 Do you know 和 Did you know，還有幾個很好用的間接問句開頭。這些說法語氣各有不同，在職場和日常對話裡都非常實用。想在開會時委婉切入一個問題，或是想問同事一件事又不想太直接，這些句型都可以派上用場。
- Could you tell me…——最常見、最禮貌，任何場合都適合
- I was wondering…——語氣更柔和，帶點猶豫，常用在正式場合或書信
- Do you have any idea…——比 Do you know 稍微隨意一點，朋友之間也常用
- I’d like to know…——語氣比較直接但仍然有禮，適合職場討論

間接問句不難，記住語序要調整、Yes/No 問句加 if 或 whether，基本上就掌握了。Do you know 和 Did you know 的語感差那麼一點點，但用對了，對方感覺完全不一樣。
